California has 15 federally designated parks,
preserves, seashores, and monuments. In addition there are 3 national
recreation areas, 1 national historic park and 4 national historic sites.
Three national parks were formed
by volcanoes: Lassen, Lava Beds,
and Pinnacles and four national parks are in the Sierra Nevada Mountains;
Devils Postpile, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Yosemite. There are three national
parks in the desert: Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and Mojave .
In addition, there are also 3 national parks situated along California's
beautiful coastline: Cabrillo, Point Reyes, and Redwood. Another spectacular
national park is comprised of five islands in the Pacific Ocean called the
Channel Islands.
California's national parks have the tallest
trees in the world in Muir Woods and Redwoods parks, the largest trees by
volume at Sequoia, and Yosemite. The highest peak in the continental US
is MT. Whitney, and the lowest point below sea level is at Badwater in
Death Valley at -282feet.
