The California desert's great appeal lies in its diversity. Things
to do range from bird watching at remote palm oases to slipping into ultra-chic
resorts. Popular activities include such unlikely
pastimes as snow skiing, surfing and even saltwater fishing. Festivals
and sporting events abound. Yet many people still come to the desert
to enjoy the peace and renewal that its sweeping landscapes and brooding
mountains provide. For all the development that has occurred in recent
years, much of this vast region remains wonderfully desolate, untouched
by human progress.
The Resort Cities area has all the amenities
required of those wanting to take advantage of the desert climate without
losing the sense of civilization.
In contrast, the attraction of the Joshua Tree
area lies in the unspoiled beauty of the low (Colorado) and high (Mohave)
desert environments.
The Anza-Borrego area offers secluded canyons
and jagged mountains, as well as colorful wildflower displays and a diverse
population of desert wildlife.
The Colorado River area provides water for agriculture,
as well as being a source of recreation and tourism.
The potential of the desert as a booming agricultural
economy and as a major source of water recreation is illustrated in the
Imperial Valley area.
The sparsely settled East Mojave area preserves
a vast, wild region of dry lakes, sand dunes, extinct volcanoes and lava
beds.
The growing communities of the more populated
West Mojave area are supported by the aerospace industry and military installations,
although it too has many parks and sanctuaries to preserve and protect this
region's rugged beauty, flora and fauna.
The Death Valley area presents an awesome example
of the forces of nature, such as spectacular canyons, craters, sand dunes,
salt flats, snow-capped mountains, badlands, ghost towns and ruins, and
a unique collection of animal and plant life.
California has three National Parks in the desert.
They are:
Death Valley National
Park, Mojave National
Preserve, and
Joshua National Park
