Located in the heart of the the San Bernardino Mountains, a two hour drive from Los Angeles, the lake is part of series of mountain ranges that string along the north and east side of the LA basin. In addition to the San Bernardino Mountains, there are the San Gabriel Mountains, San Jacinto Mountains, Angles National Forest, and the Los Padres National Forest, that provide a rich area for skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and sightseeing.
This area has dozens of lakes, hundreds of mountain camp sites, and thousands of mountain trails. There are not many more complete outdoor recreational areas in the world. You literally can go deep sea fishing, surfing, sun bathing, and snow skiing/boarding all in one day.
Like many other lakes in the area Big Bear Lake has good trout fishing especially in the spring and summer months, water-skiing, windsurfing are also popular. There are 11 marinas on the lake providing all possible services. A ski resort is minutes away from the lake.
